Choose the job before the item
Be specific about the gap: a washable white shirt for work, trousers that suit flat shoes, or a lightweight layer for chilly rooms. Check your wardrobe first. If you already have a workable version, a repair or alteration may solve the problem for less than a replacement.
Inspect what you can
Look for even seams, secure buttons, comfortable linings, and fabric that behaves the way you want. For online shopping, read the material composition, garment measurements, care label information, and return policy. A fiber name or a high original price alone does not establish quality.
Test three combinations
Before keeping a new piece, try it with at least three items you already own. Sit and move in it, and inspect it in natural light. If it requires a new bra, different shoes, and another layer before you will wear it, count those costs too.
