THE EDIT · CAPSULE WARDROBE

Capsule Wardrobe Outfit Ideas

You can get more variety from a compact wardrobe by changing proportions, layers, and finishing details. Start with these five outfit formulas and adapt the colors and shapes to your own clothes.

The easy weekday

Pair straight-leg jeans with a simple tee and an open button-down. Roll the sleeves if you like a relaxed finish, and choose shoes suited to the walking you will do. A tucked or half-tucked tee changes the proportions without adding another garment.

The polished workday

Wear tailored trousers with a fine knit and a blazer or structured cardigan. Keep the trouser hem clear of the ground with your chosen shoes. If your workplace is more casual, switch the blazer for an overshirt; if it is formal, follow the dress code first.

The relaxed weekend

Combine the everyday skirt or your second pair of trousers with a tee and sweater. Tie the sweater over your shoulders only when it is useful to have an extra layer close by. Repeating one color in your shoes or bag can make the combination feel intentional.

The simple dinner outfit

Wear your dressier top with dark jeans or trousers, then add earrings or a belt you already own. You do not need heels to make this work: clean flats or loafers can give the outfit a considered finish. Choose a layer you can comfortably wear throughout the evening.

The one-minute combination

Use an everyday dress as the base and change its outer layer: a cardigan for softness, a blazer for structure, or a jacket for warmth. Photograph successful combinations in a small phone album. On a rushed morning, a familiar outfit is more useful than a closet full of untested possibilities.
