Knowing what to look for in person and online

Part 1 Quality

Part 2 Where to Go In Real Life

Part 3 Best Places To Get Deals and Sales From Your Phone Or Laptop

Please remember it’s Quality over Quantity. Not only is this objectively better, but, it will save you money in the long term.

Trust me, I learned this the hard way, after years of shopping stupidly.

Example: DURING A LIMITED TIME SALE, I bought about 10 dresses from forever 21. I think I spent around $100 dollars because I thought more dresses = more outfits long term. I emerged feeling victorious, 10 dresses for $10 each!!!... However, I was painfully mistaken …THE DRESSES BARELY LASTED A YEAR. In hindsight, it feels like I just threw away $100.

My sophomore year of college, while on Spring Break with my best friend, visiting Kentucky I did the best shopping I’d ever done. (Note, I’m from LA; so I have been to every imaginable discount place near me). Then, in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere, shone a great beacon of hope. There it was. A Saks Off 5th store, the outlet version of the classic, luxury, store, Saks Fifth Avenue. I’d only heard tales of this place.

Stepping in that store was like entering a different realm. My best friend and I had never been to any place even remotely close to this, in terms of clothing quality. So, as I am wont to do, I immediately went to the dress section. But these dresses weren’t anything like the dresses at forever 21...Nowhere NEAR comparable. The quality was unlike any other clothing I had gotten before. though, It wasn’t just the great quality that drew me in, it was the fabulous designs.

THE DESIGNS WEREN'T SO BASIC THAT YOU COULD ACCIDENTALLY WEAR THE SAME OUTFIT (FROM F21) as a classmate having to walk around matching all day. The designs were incredible, and they had every style imaginable. Once again, I had about the same amount of money, $100. I PROCEEDED TO BUY THREE ITEMS, THOUGH.Make no mistake, while I was in line, I kept changing my mind about whether it was worth it. “Think about how many dresses you can get for the same amount at a different store.” But, they were so incredibly Beautiful, it was like some sort of fashion goddess flew in and dropped them from the heavens into the store. So, I bought them.

I’ve had those dresses for 10 years and they look exactly the same as when I bought them. I’ll remember that store forever.

I bought my favorite dress of all time there. AFTER I GOT IT, I WORE IT CONSTANTLY. But it is still in great condition. The other dresses are also still in WONDERFUL CONDITION! Not to mention they are much comfier (made with softer, much thicker material) than cheaper fabric that can sometimes irritate your skin.

Moral of the story, quality over quantity not only looks better, but it saves you money in the long run.

Shop Smart Not Hard

You don’t need unlimited money to look like YOU HAVE money. Style isn’t about buying the entire luxury store — it’s about strategy. Shopping smart means you can build a wardrobe that looks expensive without selling your soul to full retail.

Rule One: Shop Smart, Not Hard

Don’t use sales as an excuse to hoard junk. Every piece you buy should feel like an investment in yourself and your future. Your wardrobe is your bank. Every deposit should earn interest in the way people perceive you. Avoid the Designer Trap

Here’s the hard truth: paying $1,000 for a bag that costs $10 to manufacture isn’t luxury — it’s manipulation. “Luxury” companies bank on your desire to “belong”, then overcharge for scraps of leather.Never pay full retail. Ever. If you want a designer piece, buy it secondhand or at an outlet. The quality is the same, the label is the same, and you didn’t let a corporation rob your soul.

The Treasure Hunt

Thrift stores, vintage shops, consignment boutiques, and outlets are gold mines when you know what to look for. Luxury fabrics, quiet neutrals, timeless staples hide between racks of fast fashion — but only for the eyes that know what to spot.

Online

The treasure chest is endless. Poshmark. Mercari. The RealReal. Vestiaire Collective. eBay (with a sharp eye). These platforms are filled with both brand-new and gently used designer and mid-tier pieces for a fraction of the retail price.

Pro tip: don’t be shy about asking sellers for details — close-up photos of seams, tags, stitching. A true bargain is only a bargain if it lasts.
